There are approximately 280 Hikawa Shrines nationwide, primarily in the Kanto region. I visited Sagamihara Hikawa Shrine for the first time—it’s located about a 10-minute walk from JR Sagamihara Station—and it was a truly lovely shrine. It embodies the vague image that comes to mind when you hear the word “shrine,” or perhaps it’s the kind of atmosphere that directly evokes the sense of wonder I felt toward shrines as a child. Since it was May, there were many carp streamers fluttering in the breeze. It seems various events are held regularly on the grounds, and the shrine is very well maintained. I could sense that it has been cherished by the local community ever since its establishment in 1846. Although it’s just an ordinary shrine in the middle of town, it had a charm that made me want to come back again.
