The Floating Boat Town in Northern Kyoto
While you may have heard of this area of Kyoto outside the typical temple and shrine circuit, it's not exactly a place you can easily pop over to. However, it offers a distinctly different charm from other coastal tourist spots, a place steeped in tradition and old-world character. On clear days, the water surface is said to be illuminated with a vivid blue (my visit was cloudy). It's one area I'd recommend when you want to see a different side of Kyoto.
