Since learning in elementary school that Lake Biwa is Japan's largest lake, this was probably my first visit. I've seen about 15 to 20 lakes so far, but as a child of the sea, I don't recall being particularly moved by lakes. Unlike the ocean, lakes give me an image of stagnant water, which can even feel eerie. But Lake Biwa was different. Huge, and beautiful. Depending on where you go, the part of Lake Biwa facing Nagahama is exceptionally beautiful. The water quality and surface are both pristine. The atmosphere around the port, yacht harbor, and houses near the lake gives it a strong resemblance to a seaside town. Yet, perhaps because there's no sea breeze, it also has a distinctly different feel. Lake Biwa is definitely worth seeing.
