When exploring Kawagoe from JR Kawagoe Station or Kawagoe Station on the Tobu Tojo Line, it’s easy to overlook Kawagoe Hachimangu Shrine if you take a bus or taxi straight to the main street, but I highly recommend visiting it. It’s located about an 8-minute walk from Kawagoe Station. The grounds aren’t particularly large, but they’re beautifully maintained, and you can really feel the atmosphere of its deep history. For 200 yen, you can also try a game called “Yakuwari Momo,” where you throw a stone ball shaped like a peach at a sacred pillar to ward off misfortune (I ended up giving it a try). I highly recommend starting your tour of Kawagoe here.
