Echi Shrine stands at an intersection on a major road. The road was likely built around the shrine later on, but I was intrigued by the fact that a shrine was located in such a spot, so I decided to stop by. It’s a small shrine, but it has a certain mysterious charm about it. The two ginkgo trees towering behind the main hall are said to be about 500 years old. Legend has it that Minamoto no Yoriie planted them on the grounds as a commemorative gesture when he rebuilt the shrine during the Kamakura period.
