Higashi Fushimi Inari Shrine was built in 1929 as a branch shrine (same meaning as a branch temple?) of Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha. While the grounds are quite spacious, the real highlight is the 18 subsidiary shrines located deep within the main shrine area, surrounded by a considerable number of torii gates. Visiting these is apparently called "mound worship," and it's quite enjoyable, feeling like navigating a maze. It's also interesting that among the many fox messengers, there's just one pair of dogs. Overall, it has an entertaining feel, making it a shrine where people of all ages can enjoy their visit.
