Scenery from the train window on the JR Hanawa Line

The JR East Hanawa Line connects Odate Station in Akita Prefecture with Koma Station in Iwate Prefecture. While most people tend to zip through this area in no time on the Tohoku Shinkansen, I decided to take a leisurely ride on this local line instead—and was rewarded with some wonderful scenery from the train window. The vibrant greenery of the Japanese countryside is simply the best. Along the rivers that frequently crossed our path, I saw many people fishing. While the full journey takes just under three hours, I think making a trip on the Hanawa Line the highlight of your day is well worth it.
