I went by bike to an area in Asahi Ward, Yokohama, where the Oiwake, Yabashimori, and Kamikawai Community Forests are clustered together. It seems many people visit Oiwake Community Forest specifically to see the rapeseed and sunflower fields. It’s a pretty wild forest, but the paths are paved and easy to ride on—or so I thought—when I noticed something lying ahead on the path. A stuffed animal? I wondered as I approached, but it was staring right at me. An owl!? And a chick covered in white feathers, no less. Apparently, chicks sometimes end up standing right in the middle of the path… and to encounter one here in Yokohama’s Citizen’s Forest of all places. Since it wasn’t moving at all right in the middle of the road—where it could easily get hit by people or bicycles—I gently picked it up, checked to make sure it wasn’t injured, and moved it to the woods on the side of the road. Wow, what a surprising encounter.
