When I visited Kawagoe for the first time in a while, I was craving some delicious eel, so I stopped by the highly acclaimed Unagi Denbe. Since it was just before 2:00 PM on a weekday, I was able to get a seat without a reservation (though I’d recommend making one on weekends!). I ordered the “Upper” course (4,620 yen), and about 25 minutes later, my unaju appeared before me. I started with the pickles—delicious. The pickles were perfectly seasoned. Then, I took a sip of the clear soup. That was delicious, too. And then, I took a bite of the unaju. I can’t remember the last time I had eel this delicious—with just the right amount of sauce, not a drop too much. Personally, I usually find unaju tastier when it’s drenched in sauce, but this dish wasn’t trying to hide anything. At 4,600 yen, this is practically a bargain.
