The Hokkaido University Tomakomai Research Forest is located about a 15-minute drive from Tomakomai Station. Since I rode a rental bike I picked up at Tomakomai Station, it took me a little over 30 minutes, but I’m really glad I went. I was truly amazed by the rare sight of the atmosphere changing completely in just a few minutes after leaving the residential area. There are clear rules in place—areas open to the public, areas requiring a permit, and restricted areas—so please be sure to follow them. Of the approximately 2,700 hectares, about 25% is planted forest, while the rest appears to consist of secondary broadleaf forests and natural forests. In addition to the sense of mystery I felt from the forest’s depth and diversity, I was also a bit frightened by a sign warning that brown bears had been spotted relatively nearby. It seems that group use and overnight stays are possible upon application, so please check the website for details.
