When I hear Nagaoka in Niigata, even though I'm not particularly fond of Japanese history, the Nagaoka domain from the late Edo to Meiji periods comes to mind. And speaking of the Nagaoka domain, I like Shiba Ryotaro's novel The Pass, so Kawai Tsugunosuke comes to mind. So, since the Kawai Tsugunosuke Memorial Museum is about a 6-minute walk from the station, I decided to go. Its solitary appearance made me think, "Wow, it's small!" But within its compact space, Kawai Tsugunosuke's simplicity and stubborn strength of will seemed deeply embedded, making it truly wonderful (photography is prohibited, so only permitted areas are shown). ※My impression of Kawai Tsugunosuke is largely based on reading "Toge" (plus a bit from seeing him portrayed by Koji Yakusho).
