Hofu Tenmangu Shrine in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It seems hundreds of thousands of worshippers visit annually, but due to my own ignorance, I hadn't heard of it until now. I understand Hofu City flourished around this shrine, but perhaps the 35°C (95°F) midsummer heat kept people away, or maybe 6 PM was just the perfect time—it was practically empty, a truly luxurious experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere and scenery. The meticulously arranged plum blossoms and autumn leaves made it easy to imagine the stunning views in spring and fall. Wow, I'm so glad I came.
