While heading north from Kitahiroshima Station in Hokkaido on an electric bicycle, I happened upon the Kyoei Riverside Park. Many place names here derive from the Ainu language, making river names nearly unreadable at first glance. Yet, the riverbed of the incredibly beautiful Watsugawa and the perfect harmony with the surrounding houses struck me. The moment the view opened up from under the bridge, the sheer beauty and comfort made me suddenly think, "I want to live here." A little research revealed this river is so pristine that young Yamame trout inhabit the waters near this residential area. It was a stark reminder of Hokkaido's incredible nature – not just in its untouched primeval forests, but also in the beauty of its meticulously maintained green spaces.
