Hakodate boasts some of Japan's finest cuisine and views. Many visitors stick to the classic route: taking in the spectacular night view from Mount Hakodate's summit, exploring Goryokaku Fortress, or embarking on a foodie tour. Here, we introduce a slightly less mainstream Hakodate itinerary that can be fully enjoyed in about 4 hours.

We deliberately skip the Hakodate Mountain Ropeway and start at Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine. After getting pumped up by the "Kamui" torii gate, enjoy the sheer cliffs and Tsugaru Strait at Tachimachi Cape. Breezed by the pleasant sea air, gaze down at the city shimmering in the evening calm beyond the grave of poet Takuboku Ishikawa. As you head back towards the Hakodate Mountain Ropeway base station, admire several churches glowing like castles under the moonlight. Finally, savor the unique night view of Suehirocho – urban yet nostalgic – and indulge in a delicious dinner while intoxicated by the night!

Unless conditions are particularly bad, the air is usually clear, and the sheer dynamism of the Tsugaru Strait, where you can see for miles, is truly breathtaking. The sheer cliffs are also beautiful.

A cemetery right by the sea feels incredibly romantic. I can't help but imagine the deceased resting peacefully, bathed in the sea breeze and feeling refreshed. What a stunning view, though.

Even if you're not a church enthusiast, this building illuminated by exquisite night lights is worth seeing. The street lined with churches is also lovely.

I'm not particularly fond of nightscapes. Tokyo's sprawling city lights especially leave me cold. Yet this night view of Suehirocho simply made me think, "Wow, it's incredibly beautiful." Why is that?
