At Takaoka Station in Toyama Prefecture, I explored the rows of houses with their distinctive latticework, then continued on to the townscape of earthen-walled storehouses along Yamamachi Street. It gave the impression of a modern, classic townscape from before the Meiji era, with new initiatives thoughtfully incorporating the old at key points. I was deeply impressed by how such preservation and maintenance efforts are being made in various places across Japan.
