The JR West San'in Main Line runs approximately 680 km—Japan's longest route—between Hatao Station in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Kyoto Station. This section is also prone to disruptions from storms and heavy rain, and this time too, the train slowed down mid-journey, resulting in delays of over 30 minutes. Yet, this train, which continuously reflects the clear blue skies and ever-changing aspects of the Sea of Japan through its windows, is such a cool local line. Perhaps because I rode just before the Obon holiday period, the train was never crowded except for the occasional local student. I was able to enjoy the window-view journey to the fullest.
